Day 2 and a half.

Hello world.

Well, it’s nearing the end of day 3 of me being here in D.C.  I got here late Wednesday afternoon. So far I haven’t done too much.  I’ve walked up and down H Street, informally interviewed someone at a place called HOPE Realty, attended a small meeting about ministry in the neighborhood, went to a rock concert at a small place like five blocks down the street (was interesting… haha… but the Grand Archives are coming June 15 so I’ll probably go see them there) and researched a bunch about the area online and through the Census.  I live with Joe Kaufmann and he’s pretty much the coolest guy you could live with for the summer.  It’s a blessing to have my own bed, three meals a day, and wireless internet in the house.

Most of my work will be starting within a week, but it’s slow going here in the beginning. I put some pictures on here for you to look at… more of them are here at Flickr. I’ll keep taking them throughout the summer and putting them up here and on my Flickr account.

Row houses are all you see in the neighborhood.
The street I live on.  Down at the end is H Street.

Business as usual… usual businesses.

There’s a few vacant lots on this side of the street.

I’m about 16 blocks from the church, which is immediately to my right in this picture.  It’s beautiful and historic… and right next to a whole smear of commercial buildings.

Peace.

Soon to depart…

Well, I am now finished with my junior year of college! I will be leaving to go home to Virginia on May 4 and then leaving for my internship around May 15.  Keep checking back and I will be updating this blog as often as I can.

I’ll be living in D.C. and working with Grace Presbyterian Church for twelve weeks to help them do research on affordable housing in the area. I will be using qualitative research methods (focus groups, interviews, transect walks, etc.) to try and answer my research question.

I am very excited about working in the city!  You can always e-mail at chris.nystrom@gmail.com throughout the summer if you want to contact me.  God bless.
